Barnstable Mini-Red Raiders Crowned 2007 Jay Corey Memorial Tournament Champions

     The Barnstable Mini-Red Raiders 5th Grade Travel Boys Basketball Team came from behind Sunday afternoon (March 11) at the Gus Canty Memorial Recreation Center to defeat Mashpee, 52-37, in the championship game of the 2007 Jay Corey Memorial Basketball Tournament.
Sam Telman led all scorers with a season-high 20 points and recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds. He added 3 steals and went 2-7 from the charity stripe.
Marcus Cunningham also turned in a season-best performance with 15 points, including a 5-6 effort from the free throw line. Cunningham had 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Behind Telman and Cunningham was Rob Stuart who had 6 points, 6 rebounds, a steal and a beautiful, all-out hustle blocked shot, running the length of the floor to track down a Mashpee shooter.
      Conor Walsh came behind Stuart with 4 points and added 4 rebounds and an assist. Tim Rodrigues and Justus Chaffee, both splitting time at point guard, each had two points. Chaffee added a steal and played exceptional defense. Rodrigues was on veritable fire throughout the game, putting intense pressure on the hot-shooting Mashpee guards. He added five assists and had two rebounds.
Derek Estes played phenomenally well throughout the game and had 3 points and 3 rebounds. Tom Mullen, Tyler Bennett and Darien Kaski all played well throughout the game. Bennett had two solid rebounds beneath the glass. Barnstable went 10-19 from the charity stripe, hitting free throws when they counted the most in the second half.
Mashpee’s Paul Peters led his team with 10 points.
      Barnstable was down by as many as 6 points in the first half, but it took control of the tempo of the game by slowing things down, even though Mashpee put forth considerable pressure beneath the glass and outrebounded Barnstable for numerous second chance field goals. By halftime, Barnstable led 25-15.
In the second half, Mashpee came on strong and cut the lead down to 4 points but Barnstable did not relent and continued to apply solid defensive pressure until it had re-established its 10-point lead.
      Last Saturday afternoon (March 10), Barnstable squared off against Mashpee in the precursor to the Championship finale on Sunday, defeating Mashpee, 45-36.
Rob Stuart led the Barnstable offense with his best output of the season, 12 points, 4 rebounds, a steal and blocked shot.
Stuart was followed by Marcus Cunningham who had 11 points, 5 rebounds and two steals. Behind Cunningham was Derek Estes who drilled two consecutive three-pointers with about 6:00 remaining in the second half to give Barnstable the cushion it needed to breathe easy against the hard-charging, hot-shooting Mashpee boys.
      Estes finished with 8 points, had 2 blocked shots and 3 rebounds. Behind him was Timmy Rodrigues who collected 6 points and had two assists in a fine effort. Following Rodrigues was Sam Telman who had 4 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
Also scoring for Barnstable were Conor Walsh (2 points, steal) and Tyler Bennett (2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists). Darien Kaski played arguably his best game of the season with 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 blocked shots. Justus Chaffee, Jack Telman and Tom Mullen also played well for the Red & White.
Earlier in the day last Saturday, Barnstable had to get through perhaps its toughest obstacle in the tournament in a free-wheeling, hot-handed Sandwich 5th grade team.
      It was in this game that Barnstable truly showed its depth and focus as it came from behind a deficit as large as 8 points to defeat Sandwich, 48-34.
Sam Telman led all scorers with 17 points and played a relentless game beneath the boards, collecting 13 rebounds. He also had 4 steals and went 1-3 from the free throw line. His effort proved to be a pivotal one for the Red & White as it methodically chipped away at Sandwich’s lead, regained its own lead and left for the locker room at halftime ahead 26-14.
      It was a lead Barnstable would not relinquish. Derek Estes was on fire from the field, hitting four second-half jumpers from near the arc for 8 points. He added 4 rebounds and had a steal and two assists.
Behind Estes came Rob Stuart who collected 5 points, 7 rebounds and had 2 assists. Behind Estes came Marcus Cunningham with 4 points, 3 rebounds and six steals. Tom Mullen turned in one of his best performances of the season with 4 points in the arly going that really gave the Red & White a morale booster. Also scoring for Barnstable were Justus Chaffee (2 points, 3 rebounds, assist), Darien Kaski (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Conor Walsh (2 points, steal).
      Barnstable kicked off the tournament on Friday night (March 9) versus archrival Falmouth. The first half proved to be as tight as Barnstable expected it to be, as the Red & White had established a deceptive 9-point advantage, 29-20.
By game’s end, however, Barnstable out-endured its hosts, 46-26.
      Sam Telman again led all scorers with 14 points and was a veritable machine on defense. He collected 8 rebounds, had 5 steals and a blocked shot. He added an assist on offense. Rob Stuart followed close behind with a respectful 8 points, 7 rebounds, assist, blocked shot and pair of steals in an all-around fine effort.
Derek Estes turned in a 7-point performance and added two rebounds a steal and an assist. Marcus Cunningham also played well, collecting 6 points (3 rebs., asst., 2 steals). Also scoring and playing well were Tim Rodrigues (4 points), Justus Chaffee (2 points, block, asst.), Tyler Bennett (2 pts., 5 rebs., 2 steals), Jack Telman (2 pts.) and Conor Walsh (1 point). Darien Kaski added an assist.
      Barnstable is now 17-18 on the 2006-2007 season as it heads for its last tournament of the season in Bourne next weekend.


Barnstable Downs King Philip and Duxbury in Homestand Twinbill

Barnstable hosted and defeated King Philip (Wrentham/Plainville) Saturday night (March 3) at the Horace Mann 5th-6th Grade Charter School in Marstons Mills, 49-42, and followed shortly thereafter with a nailbiting, 35-33 victory over Duxbury.

     Marcus Cunningham and Rob Stuart paved the way on offense for Barnstable versus King Philip, each with 10 points, followed by Sam Telman and Conor Walsh, each with 8 points. Derek Estes and Tim Rodrigues also played solidly throughout the affair with Estes garnering 7 points and Rodrigues, 6 points. Telman played a vital difference in this match-up with 20 rebounds, a new team record. Cunningham and Estes each nailed critical 3-pointers in the game.

     In game two Saturday night versus Duxbury, Barnstable was led by Derek Estes whose sharpshooting gave him 11 points. He added 8 rebounds. Sam Telman followed close behind with 10 points and Rob Stuart had 8 points to go along with five rebounds. Other scorers were Tim Rodrigues (4 pts.) and Marcus Cunningham (2 pts.).

     Versus Duxbury, Justus Chaffee played solid defense and had two steals and two rebounds. Darien Kaski also played solid defense and had a pair of rebounds. TJ Wardwell played very well and added a steal, while Tyler Bennett ramped his game up a notch with some outstanding hustle.

     Versus King Philip, Tim Rodrigues had 3 assists, while Derek Estes had a blocked shot, five rebounds, an assist and two steals to go along with his 7 points. Rob Stuart had 3 assists, 5 steals and 7 rebounds to go along with his 10 points.


Mini-Raiders Pick Up Two Big Wins

The Mini-Red Raiders hosted Duxbury and Canton 5th grade boys travel teams Saturday night (Feb. 3) at the Horace Mann Charter 5th-6th Grade School in Marstons Mills and came out on top with two big wins.

     Engaged in a neck-and-neck battle with a lightning-quick Duxbury team throughout the game, it all came down to a pair of free throws with just 20 seconds left on the clock in the second half and the score knotted at 33-33. Conor Walsh missed the first one but hit his second free throw for the 34-33 lead and Barnstable dropped back into zone coverage. Duxbury's point guard tried launching a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left on the clock, but Walsh blocked the shot and the Mini-Red Raiders had the victory. Marcus Cunningham led all scorers with 11 points, followed by Walsh with 10 points.

     In game two versus Canton, Sam Telman led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Cunningham who had 7 points and Jack Telman with 4 points as the Mini-Red Raiders won, 39-27.

     In the Duxbury game, Cunningham played a fantastic game on both sides of the court, pacing the Mini-Red Raiders offense with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2assists, a blocked shot and 4 steals. He went 5-11 from the charity stripe. Cunningham was folowed by Conor Walsh who had 10 points, two rebounds and a blocked shot, Sam Telman with 8 points, six rebounds, two assists and 2 steals. Rob Stuart followed with 3 points, 2 rebounds and an assist and Justus Chaffee who had 2 points and an assist. Derek Estes proved invaluable beneath the boards with 6 rebounds in the effort. Outstanding defensive pressure was provided throughout by Draien Kaski and Tim Rodrigues.

     In Barnstable's second game of the evening, Sam Telman led the way with 16 points toward a 39-27 Mini-Red Raiders' victory. Telman added 4 rebounds and had 6 steals. Marcus Cunningham followed with 7 points, had two assists, a blocked shot and a pair of rebounds in the effort. Jack Telman followed Cunningham with 4 points and added a steal, an assist and a rebound in his first full game as a Mini-Red Raider.

     Justus Chaffee collected 3 points, had two steals and an assist and played phenomenally well throughout the game. Tim Rodrigues added two points and had two steals and an assist. TJ Wardwell added two points and an assist, followed by Conor Walsh with 2 points and Tom Mullen with 2 points and two rebounds. Rob Stuart had one point and five rebounds in the effort.    


Mini-Red Raiders Go 2-1 in Somerset Tournament

Thanks to a superlative defensive effort by Marcus Cunningham and the offensive output by Sam Telman, Conor Walsh and Derek Estes, Barnstable came from behind a 12-5 deficit at halftime last Sunday (Jan. 28) to defeat Swansea, 28-13 in the Somerset Travel Tournament.

     Telman played spectacularly, dumping in 12 points and collecting 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and had a game-high 5 steals. Walsh collected 8 points and Estes had 6 points. Cunningham fouled out with 1:30 to go in the fourth quarter, but his effort was enough as Swansea had no chance to come back. He had 2 points and a pair of steals and 5 rebounds. Tim Rodrigues, Darien Kaski, Rob Stuart, Justus Chaffee and Tom Mullen also played well in the victory. Chaffee had one assist, one rebound and one steal. Stuart had a steal and a blocked shot. Mullen and Kaski also played fantastic defense for Barnstable.

     Barnstable fell to Milliken (Fall River) last Saturday, 27-23, in overtime, after leading Milliken 22-7 at halftime in regulation. The Mini-Red Raiders simply could not buy a basket or free throw in the entire second half of regulation or in the 3:00 overtime frame.

     Cunningham and Walsh led Barnstable each with 6 points, followed by Rob Stuart with 5 points and Sam Telman with 4 points. Derek Estes added 2 points in the loss.

    Earlier in the day (Jan. 27), Barnstable soundly defeated Westport, 35-16, thanks to a career-high output by Sam Telman who had 17 points. He was followed by Marcus Cunningham who had 7 points, Tim Rodrigues with 4 points and Darien Kaski, TJ Wardwell and Conor Walsh each with 2 points.  Derek Estes added one point and had two blocked shots.

Mini-Red Raiders Crowned SelectHoops 5th Grade Tournament Champions

Barnstable was the benefactor of huge efforts by several individual players throughout the weekend in the First Annual SelectHoops Travel Team Tournament in Fall River this weekend, but chiefly it was an all-around team effort that culminated in the Barnstable Mini-Red Raiders being crowned Tournament Champions Sunday after its 30-10 victory over Somerset.

    Conor Walsh had 8 points, Sam Telman and Marcus Cunningham each had 6 points and Derek Estes had 4 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Mini-Red Raiders in the Championship game at the Bank Street Armory in Fall River (Jan. 21).

     Barnstable held Somerset to just 2 points in the second half thanks to a phenomenal effort by Rob Stuart (5 rebounds, 2 assts., 3 pts.), Justus Chaffee (5 steals) and Tim Rodrigues (4 steals, 3 pts.) and intense pressure all-around from Darien Kaski, Tom Mullen and TJ Wardwell.

     Barnstable's win versus Somerset followed on the heels of a tough victory over Swansea, 27-22, that featured an 11-point effort by Sam Telman (3 steals, 5 rebounds), and 9 points from Marcus Cunningham (4 rebounds, 2 steals). Other point scorers for Barnstable were Derek Estes (3 pts., 3 rebounds), Conor Walsh (2 pts., 4 rebounds), Rob Stuart (1 pt., 4 rebounds, 2 assists) and TJ Wardwell (1 pt.,).

     Marcus Cunningham was named Tournament MVP for his efforts while Telman was the Tournament MVP runner-up.

     Barnstable fell in the tournament tournament to the New Bedford AAU squad, 43-21, last Saturday (Jan. 20) at Diman Regional Technical Vocational High School in Fall River. Conor Walsh led the Mini-Red Raiders with 5 points, followed by Marcus Cunningham with 4 points, Justus Chaffee with 2 points, Darien Kaski with 2 points, Derek Estes with 2 points and Rob Stuart with 2 points, 2 rebounds and an assist. Kaski added 4 rebounds, followed by Chaffee with a blocked shot and two steals, Rodrigues with 2 rebounds, Telman with a rebound, assist and steal, Estes with 2 blocked shots a rebound and a steal and Tom Mullen with 3 rebounds and a steal.


Barnstable AAU 5th grade Mini-Red Raiders Head to Boston for Basketball City Classic

Marcus Cunningham collected a season-high 13 points versus a tough Wakefield team last Saturday (Jan. 13) at Basketball City in Boston, but the Barnstable 5th Grade AAU team could not hold on down the stretch and got itself into foul trouble, falling 41-34.
      Sam Telman, Conor Walsh, Rob Stuart, Derek Estes and Tom Mullen each had 4 points behind Cunningham. Darien Kaski also scored with one point from the charity stripe. Barnstable went 16-57 from the floor in the game which truly spelled the difference as its defense played fairly well throughout the first half.
      In its second game last Saturday (Jan. 13) in the Basketball City Classic, Barnstable fell to the very tough Rochester team, 48-19, as the Red & White shot a dismal 12.9% from the floor (8-62). Barnstable cut 30 points from Rochester's output in an early season match-up, but could not muster an improvement over its offensive output.
      The line-up of Tom Mullen, Tim Rodrigues, Darien Kaski, Justus Chaffee and TJ Wardwell played exceptionally well versus the fiercely competitive and gifted New Haven, CT Boys & Girls Club in game three last Saturday, holding New Haven to a 10-8 lead before Barnstable simply ran out of gas. The final was New Haven 48, Barnstable 18.
      Versus Rochester/Fall River, Sam Telman led the offense with 6 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Marcus Cunningham (3 points, rebound, assist), Rob Stuart (2 pts, 5 rebounds), Conor Walsh (2 pts., assist), Justus Chaffee (2 pts., 2 rebounds) and Derek Estes (2 pts., rebound, assist, steal).
      Versus New Haven, CT, Sam Telman again led the way on offense with 6 pts., followed by Tom Mullen (5 pts.), Marcus Cunningham (3 pts.), Derek Estes (2 pts.) and Derek Estes (2 pts.).


Barnstable AAU Boys 5th Grade Team Goes 3-1 In Weekend Slate

     Led by a staunch defense and an excellent running game, the Barnstable AAU Mini-Red Raiders boys 5th grade team kicked off the 2006-2007 season in fine fashion last weekend in Foxboro at the Mass Premier Courts 2006 Holiday Invitational Tournament and finished as tournament runner-up.
The Mini-Red Raiders defeated a strong Canton 5th grade travel team, 50-29, thanks to a career high output by shooting guard Sam Telman who collected 14 points. Telman also had four steals on the day.
      Behind Telman came power forward Marcus Cunningham and center Rob Stuart, each with 8 points. Cunningham also had 7 rebounds a steal and blocked shot in a fantastic effort. Stuart added four rebounds and had one blocked shot.
Forward Derek Estes turned in six points for the Mini-Red Raiders, collected 10 rebounds and added an assist and a blocked shot. He was followed by point guard Timmy Roderigues (4 points, 4 assists), Darien Kaski (4 points, 2 steals, 3 rebounds), Conor Walsh (4 points, 4 rebounds), Justus Chaffee (2 points, 4 assists), and Tommy Mullen (4 rebounds).
      Barnstable then faced a tough Millis 5th grade travel team and took home a solid 37-19 victory thanks to an all-around good effort by each team member.
Derek Estes led the way on offense with 8 points and collected three rebounds underneath and 3 steals. Sam Telman followed with 7 points and had 3 steals and three rebounds.
      Marcus Cunningham and Timmy Roderigues each collected five points in the affair, with Roderigues posting four assists and picking up two steals. Cunningham also had four rebounds. Conor Walsh and Justus Chaffee followed each with four points in the game, with Chaffee adding three steals and a pair of rebounds. Walsh added four rebounds.
      Darien Kaski and Rob Stuart each had two points for the Mini-Red Raiders, with Stuart picking up five hard-earned rebounds against Millis’ tough power forwards.
      On Sunday (Nov. 19), Sam Telman again paced the Barnstable offense, leading the way with 7 points, four rebounds, 3 steals and an assist in Barnstable’s come-from-behind, 35-22 victory. Marcus Cunningham matched Telman’s 7-point output and added three steals, four rebounds, a blocked shot and an assist.
Down by as many as six points in the first half, Barnstable seemed at odds in attempting to figure out the fast-paced Needham offense, but pure grit and solid determination enabled the Mini-Red Raiders to come from behind in the second half and take the lead, never to look back.
      Down the stretch and ahead by just one basket, Tom Mullen and Marcus Cunningham both took matters into their own hands, with Cunningham taking a nice feed from the point on the outside and working off a good Rob Stuart screen to nail a bucket and take the foul. Cunningham sank the free throw to perfect the play.
Mullen did the exact same thing, driving the lane hard with just over two minutes to play and taking the foul, while also making the basket. Mullen perfected the play with a made foul shot and the Mini-Red Raiders’ victory was almost sealed.
      Conor Walsh put his teammates’ at ease by going 3-4 from the foul line with just over a minute left to play to give the Mini-Red Raiders the final breathing room it needed to hold Needham at bay.
      Other fine efforts were turned in by Derek Estes (6 points, four rebounds, 3 steals), Conor Walsh (5 points, five rebounds, two steals), Rob Stuart (4 points, 2 blocked shots, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) and point men Timmy Roderigues and Justus Chaffee. Chaffee had two steals, two rebounds and two assists while Roderigues had three points, a steal and an assist.
      With the victory over Needham, Barnstable qualified for the tournament championship versus undefeated Rochester and ended up having to play shorthanded. The end result was not pretty as the physically mature and superior team, Rochester, manhandled Barnstable, 71-19. Regardless, the Mini-Red Raiders did not quit and were led by the incredible hustle of point men Justus Chaffee and Timmy Roderigues. Roderigues led the offense with six points.
Chaffee put Barnstable’s first points on the board nailing two free throws. The mini-Red Raiders now stand at 3-1 on the season and head to Wilmington, Delaware Dec. 2-3 to play in the 2006 H. Fletcher Brown Classic.
