Barnstable 8th Grade Boys Travel Hoop Team Stages Sound Win Over North Attleboro
MANSFIELD — Backed by a whirlwind, 27-point performance by point guard Tevin Hill and a last-seconds three-pointer by Damon Blake, the Barnstable 8th grade boys travel basketball team staged a phenomenal , 65-62 victory over a tough North Attleboro team last weekend at the 2007 Mass Premier Invitational Hoop Tournament.
Hill proved dynamic in this affair as he shot a remarkable 13-15 from the floor, turned in 7 assists, went 1-2 from the free throw line, and had 7 steals.
Blake went 2-8 from the floor but two of those shots were treys and the most important one could not have come at a better time as he drilled one from downtown with 39 seconds remaining on the clock to make it 65-62. It would prove the game-winner.
Everett Walsh followed Hill with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He added an assist and three steals.
Tim Biliouris was close behind with 8 points and 8 rebounds and added four steals and a pair of assists.
Connor Murphy added 6 points and six rebounds and also had a steal. Other scorers for Barnstable included Luke Tucker (2 pts., 2 assists), Steve Holtzman (2 pts.) and Dada Springer (1 point).
In the third game of the tournament for Barnstable, the Red & White tore off a 13-0 lead to start the game but the patient Westwood five came roaring back, denying Barnstable any points on its next 9 trips down the floor until Westwood built a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Barnstable ultimately fell, in spite of a solid effort, 67-59, but it was 24 turnovers and 31 missed field goals that truly took a bite out of Barnstable’s hopes to advance to the tourney title game.
Connor Murphy led Barnstable in the scoring department with 16 points, followed by Tevin Hill with 13 points, Tim Biliouris with 10 points and Everett Walsh with 9 points.
Derek Lucas tacked on six points and played solidly beneath the rim, adding four rebounds. Damon Blake added five points but had 7 assists and a pair of steals.
Biliouris tallied 6 rebounds, five assists and had three blocked shots, while Walsh added 7 rebounds, 3 steals and had a blocked shot and an assist.
Hill went 5-7 from the floor had two assists, went 3-3 from the charity stripe and added two rebounds and a steal. Luke Tucker added an assist and a rebound.
In the first game of the tournament, Barnstable proved rusty and overmatched as it had to cope with a 65-38 season-opening defeat to Westwood in spite of a 24-23 halftime score.
Everett Walsh led Barnstable with 11 points (8 rebounds, 2 assts., block, steal), followed by Connor Murphy (10 pts.), Tim Biliouris (9 pts., 3 blocks, 4 assts.), Tevin Hill (5 pts., 4 rebs., 3 assts.) and Damon Blake (3 pts., 5 assts.).
Barnstable 6th Grade Boys Fare Well at Mass Premier Invitational
MANSFIELD — The Barnstable Mini-Red Raiders boys 6th grade travel basketball team fared well last weekend at the 2007 Mass Premier Courts Invitational, ending the weekend with a dominant, 62-31 victory over Foxboro.
Sam Telman led all scorers with 23 points on the day, and notched his second double-double of the season with 13. He added two steals and three assists and also went 3-3 from the charity stripe to round off a rock solid morning.
Ironically, Barnstable appeared to be behind the eight ball from the opening tip-off as Foxboro won the tip and drove right in for a quick 2-0 lead, but it was the only lead Foxbor would enjoy as the Mini-Red Raiders remained calm, patient and worked the ball around the perimeter and inside in what appeared like true, mid-season form.
Behind Telman were Conor Walsh and Derek Estes each with 8 points. Estes added four rebounds and had an assist and blocked shot. Walsh had a pair of assists and hit a pair of three-pointers.
Marcus Cunningham and Rob Stuart followed with 6 points apiece, but Stuart proved instrumental on the boards as he brought down 11 and also added three steals. Cunningham added four rebounds.
Darien Kaski and Timmy Roderigues followed up with five and four points apiece, respectively, with Kaski adding a pair of assists and steals. Mike Bilodeau added two points and brought down a pair of rebounds.
Justus Chaffee, Charlie DeSimone and Jack Telman also played well.
In the season-opener versus a well-coached Hanover team, Barnstable found itself in a quick hole in which it remained for the bulk of the affair before it let loose and shook off the cobwebs to stage a 12-point comeback which it held tightly to at 52-52 until there were just 30 seconds remaining in the game.
The comeback was highlighted by a Rob Stuart three-pointer when he drained it on the perimeter to the excited delight of the crowd.
Left with no timeouts, Barnstable was forced to foul in hopes it could rebound a miss and take it back for the win, but Hanover hit two freebies to make it 54-52 and Barnstable could not convert on its last possession. One youth coach present said “that was the best youth game I’ve ever seen.”
Hanover would go on to win all of its tournament games over the weekend.

Hanover went to the charity stripe an amazing 40 times and went 16-40 from the line while Barnstable went 9-15 from the line.
Barnstable met its match and then some versus a gifted and well-orchestrated Westwood team, falling 55-32 on the heels of its battle with Hanover.
Sam Telman was held to just eight points, followed by Kaski (7 pts.), Estes (4 pts.), Cunningham (4 pts.), Rodrigues (3 pts.), and Chaffee, Bilodeau and Walsh each with just two points.
