4th grade Boys Win Bourne Tournament Title 

       The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball team captured its second tournament championship in as many weeks Sunday (March 26), when it soundly defeated rival South Plymouth, 31-19, at the Bourne Middle School.

       The tournament title victory at the 14 th Annual Bourne Youth Swish League David Busnengo Memorial Youth Basketball Tournament was Barnstable’s fourth consecutive win versus four tough-to-beat teams. The overall record of the Red & White in its last 12 games of the season was 10-2.

       Marcus Cunningham led all point scorers with 10 points in Barnstable’s 31-19 win over South Plymouth in the tournament championship game. He was followed by Rob Stuart with 6 points, Sam Telman with 5 points, Colby Blaze with 3 points, Timmy Roderigues with 3 points, Brandon Lynch with 2 points and Conor Walsh with 2 points. A fantastic defensive effort was turned in by Justus “Choo Choo” Chaffee.

The title win was preceded by Barnstable’s come-from-behind, 34-21 win over a very tough Hingham team last Saturday night (March 25) at the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Building.

       Rob Stuart played a spectacular game under the boards and had a team-high 9 points. He was followed by Marcus Cunningham (7 points), Colby Blaze (6 points), Tommy Mullen (3 points), Timmy Roderigues (3 points), Clyde Perry (2 points), Justus Chaffee (2 points) and Conor Walsh (2 points).

       Barnstable did not enter the Hingham game without earning its way in a scrappy, back-and-forth win last Friday versus Carver. The Red & White won 37-20, but not without determination and focus.

       Rob Stuart led the way in his best game of the tournament with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals, followed by Marcus Cunningham with 8 points and 3 rebounds. The high-scoring duo was followed by Seamus Murray who turned in his tournament best with 6 points and a pair of steals.

      Other Barnstable scorers included Sam Telman (3 points), Colby Blaze (2 points, 3 steals, 2 assists), Justus Chaffee (2 points), Timmy Roderigues (2 points), Tommy Mullen (2 points, assist) and Conor Walsh (2 points, 3 rebounds).

      In game one of the tournament versus Bourne, Barnstable staged a 34-17 win over host Bourne.

       Conor Walsh and Marcus Cunningham led all scorers, each with 7 points, followed by Colby Blaze (4 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds), Sam Telman (4 points, assist, 2 rebounds), Rob Stuart (4 points, 3 steals, rebound), Seamus Murray (3 points, 4 rebounds), Clyde Perry (3 points, assist, 3 rebounds) and Timmy Roderigues (2 points, assist). Sean Campbell added an assist and TJ Wardwell played phenomenal defense throughout the affair.

       Barnstable finishes the 2005-2006 six-month season at 19-17 overall.


4th Grade Boys Reach Tournament Finals, but Bow Down to Sacred Heart 

      The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys travel basketball team staged two strong wins versus Bourne and Coventry, Rhode Island before losing to Sacred Heart twice in the 2006 Seventh Annual Barnstable Pot of Gold Basketball Tournament last weekend in the championship final.

        Tommy Mullen, Colby Blaze and Robbie “The Big Man” Stuart paved the way for victory versus Bourne last Friday night (March 17), as the Red & White won handily, 40-10. Mullen, Blaze and Stuart each had 6 points. Mullen collected six rebounds and had three steals in his best game of the 2005-2006 season, while Blaze had an assist, 3 rebounds and a steal. Stuart added 7 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot.

Following the trio of Mullen, Blaze and Stuart was Sean “Soup” Campbell who had 4 points (2 rebounds, assist, steal), Sam “Bam” Telman (4 points, 5 rebounds, steal), Conor Walsh (3 points, assist), Marcus Cunningham (3 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), Timmy “The Rocket” Roderigues (2 points, 4 steals, assist), Justus “Choo Choo” Chaffee (2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Clyde Perry (2 points, 3 rebounds, steal). TJ Wardwell added a solid game on defense with a rebound and steal.

       In game two of the tournament, Barnstable lost a heartbreaker to Sacred Heart, 23-18, as the Red & White missed nine free throws that would have spelled the difference in an otherwise dead-even game.

        Marcus Cunningham led Barnstable with 7 points and added 4 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Following him was Rob Stuart with 4 points (6 rebounds, 2 steals), Conor Walsh (2 points, 5 rebounds, assist), Colby Blaze (2 points), Tom Mullen (2 points, 2 steals) and Timmy Roderigues (1 point, 2 assist, steal).

      Versus Coventry, Rhode Island, Barnstable may have been ice cold from the floor, going 9-41 and 3-26 from the charity stripe, but its defensive prowess proved the difference as it allowed the visitors just five points in the first half and three points in the second half, pulling out a 21-8 win to advance to the tournament championship.

      Marcus Cunningham again led all Red & White scorers with 6 points on the evening and added 8 rebounds, a blocked shot, assist and 2 steals. Following Cunningham was Conor Walsh (4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Colby Blaze (4 points, 4 rebounds, assist, steal), Tim Roderigues (2 points, assist, steal), Clyde Perry (2 points, steal, 2 rebounds), Tom Mullen (2 points, steal, blocked shot) and Robbie Stuart (1 point, 8 rebounds, 3 steals).

      In the championship game versus Sacred Heart last Sunday, Barnstable just could not find the bucket as it went a collective 7-34 from the floor and 5-17 from the free throw line. Marcus Cunningham and Robbie Stuart each had 8 points to lead Barnstable’s offense. Stuart added three rebounds and had 2 steals. Cunningham 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

      The only other Barnstable player to score was Timmy Roderigues who had 3 points, 2 rebounds and 4 steals.

Playing a gutsy, unexpected game at point guard was Conor Walsh who had 4 assists, a steal and 7 hard-earned rebounds. Sam Telman collected 3 rebounds underneath in a fine effort, while Colby Blaze picked up two nice steals.

Barnstable finishes the season this weekend in Bourne.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Crowned Tournament Champions

The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball Team (BYBL) was crowned 2006 Jay Corey Memorial Tournament Champions last Sunday afternoon (March 12) after staging a major upset of top-seeded South Plymouth, 45-40.

  South Plymouth had but one loss for the 2005-2006 season coming into the game versus Barnstable and was regular season champions of the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League.

  Rob Stuart turned in his best performance of the season, dumping in 14 points versus a very tough South Plymouth defense. Stuart went 6-10 from the charity stripe and added had 10 rebounds for his first-ever double-double. He also had three steals and two blocked shots on the day.

  Marcus Cunningham followed with 7 points to help pace a Barnstable offense that averaged 42.5 points per game throughout the tournament. Following Cunningham was Sam Telman who nailed two clutch buckets in the game’s last two minutes as South Plymouth came close to tying the game. Telman collected 6 points on the day, followed by Seamus Murray (4 points, assist, block, 3 rebounds), Timmy Roderigues (4 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds), Conor Walsh (4 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds), Colby Blaze (2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), Justus Chaffee (2 points) and Clyde Perry (2 points).

  Stuart tied a team-, season- and game-high points per game mark with his 14 points, matching Timmy Roderigues’s high-point total of three games before.

  Roderigues was on fire in Barnstable’s tourney-opening game versus Falmouth last Saturday (March 11), when he dumped in a whirlwind 14 points in Barnstable’s 46-3 win over Falmouth.

  Following Roderigues was Sam Telman who collected 7 points, Marcus Cunningham (6 points, 4 rebounds, assist, block), Conor Walsh (4 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds), Brandon Lynch (4 points), Clyde Perry (3 points, 2 rebounds), TJ Wardwell (2 points), Rob Stuart (2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Seamus Murray (2 points, 5 rebounds, steal, block).

  In game two of the Jay Corey Memorial Tournament, Barnstable faced a tougher Sandwich team, but put forth an equally tough effort and came home with a 42-18 win.

  Marcus Cunningham turned in his season-best performance with 13 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals to lead Barnstable in its victory.

  Following Cunningham was Timmy Roderigues who had 7 points , Sam Telman (6 points and 10 rebounds), Rob Stuart (6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Brandon Lynch (4 points, 4 rebounds), Colby Blaze (4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) and TJ Wardwell (2 points, assist, rebound). Sean Campbell had an assist and a rebound. Conor Walsh added 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals to the effort.

  In game three of the tournament, Barnstable faced a very tough Mashpee team, but every member of Barnstable’s 14-man roster contributed to a well-earned win, 37-27.

  Rob Stuart paced the offense with 8 points and had 6 rebounds, followed by Marcus Cunningham (7 points), Timmy Roderigues (6 points), Colby Blaze (6 points), Conor Walsh (2 points, 3 assists, 7 rebounds), Clyde Perry (2 points), Seamus Murray (2 points) and Brandon Lynch (2 points). Justus Chaffee, Colby Blaze, Tom Mullen and Brandon Lynch played exceptional defense throughout the tournament.

  Barnstable plays versus Bourne Friday night, March 17, at Barnstable High School at 6:00 p.m.   


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Play Solidly in Sandwich 5th Grade Tourney

     The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys basketball team played their hearts out Sunday morning at Sandwich High School, almost pulling out a close one versus the West Plymouth 5th Grade Boys, losing 21-20 in the Sandwich Basketball Tournament.
      With just 3.0 seconds left in the game, Rob Stuart snared a tough rebound underneath, drove to the bucket and was fouled and headed to the line. Stuart hit 1-2 from the charity stripe, almost forcing overtime in the 21-20 loss.
Seamus Murray played arguably his best game of the season, dumping in 8 points and going 2-2 from the free throw line. He had 6 of his 8 points in the last 4:00 minutes of the game.
      Timmy Roderigues played fantastically throughout the game on defense, as did Justus Chaffee. Roderigues collected 5 points on the day. Chaffee had two steals and put immense pressure on the opposing team’s point man. TJ Wardwell also put in a solid, all-out effort on defense.
      Stuart was tough to beat beneath the boards, collecting 6 rebounds and posting 2 points. Other scorers for Barnstable included Sam Telman (2 points), Tommy Mullen (2 points) and Conor Walsh (1 point).
      Barnstable went 6-23 from the free throw line and turned the ball over on offense 25 times, spelling the difference in the game.
The evening before, Barnstable again played a scrappy brand of defense versus a tough South Plymouth team, but fell 20-6.
      Colby Blaze, Conor Walsh and Marcus Cunningham each had two points for Barnstable. Roderigues collected 5 steals and 4 rebounds in an all-out, hustling effort. Blaze had 4 steals and 3 rebounds to add to his fine overall effort. Barnstable went just 3-29 from the floor and only went to the foul line once.
      Last Friday night at Sandwich High School, Barnstable fell 19-12 to the Sandwich 5th grade boys basketball team in spite of a solid second-half effort.
      Sam Telman collected 4 points to pace the Barnstable offense and added a pair of rebounds and steals. Timmy Roderigues collected 3 points, all from the charity stripe and added 3 steals. Marcus Cunningham had 4 points late in the second half to breath hope into Barnstable’s effort. Rob Stuart went 1-2 from the free throw line and collected 3 rebounds and two steals.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Hold Their Heads High in Basketball City Classic

After 10 days off, the Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball team participated in the Annual Basketball City Classic in Boston last weekend, downing Medfield in the weekend’s opening game, 39-7.

  Sam Telman posted his season-best game with eight points and five rebounds to lead Barnstable’s well-rounded offensive attack.

  Telman was followed by Seamus Murray who came off the bench on fire to knock in 5 points and collect 9 rebounds. Murray added two steals to his effort.

  Following Telman and Murray were Colby Blaze (4 points, 6 assists), Timmy Roderigues (4 points), Brendan Lynch (4 points), Clyde Perry (4 points, 4 rebounds), Tommy Mullen (4 points), Marcus Cunningham (4 points, 4 rebounds) and Rob Stuart (2 points).

  Sean Campbell did a fine job playing the point with 6 assists and a pair of steals. Justus Chaffee and Conor Walsh also played well, with Walsh collecting 5 rebounds and adding a pair of steals on defense.

  Barnstable then faced the nationally ranked (3 rd ) 4 th grade AAU team “Merritting Attention” club from Roxbury, a team that sported a 6’0 tall, 165-pound, 11-year-old center and fell, 42-8. The loss was not without great effort, though, as Timmy Roderigues, Seamus Murray, Tommy Mullen, Marcus Cunningham and Clyde Perry all added superb defensive efforts to pace the entire squad. Murray and Perry each had 3 points in the game, while Roderigues had 2 points. The entire Barnstable team held its head high against an incomparably gifted Roxbury team.

  In game three of the Basketball City Classic, Barnstable and the Boston Ballers were neck and neck through the first half, but could not keep up the fast-paced tempo in the Red & White’s third-straight game of the day. Boston defeated Barnstable, 28-15. Brendan Lynch and Marcus Cunningham played exceptionally throughout the game.

  The Barnstable boys will play next versus Sandwich Friday, March 3 in the Sandwich Tournament at Sandwich High School at 7:00 p.m.

Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Bow Out Early in Playoffs

The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys basketball team bowed out early of the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League 2006 playoffs, falling to Berkley, 18-13.

  Barnstable simply could not find the basket and fell to a Berkley team it had beaten both times during the regular season, at home and on the road. It was the lowest offensive output for the Barnstable team all season. The Red & White finished the regular season at 8-7 overall.

Rob Stuart was the big gun for Barnstable with 7 points on the day, followed by Marcus Cunningham with 6 points and Timmy Roderigues with 2 points.The loss of power forward Dereck Pacheco (out for season with injury) and point guard Colby Blaze (flu), proved too much for Barnstable to overcome as it struggled to collect defensive rebounds beneath the boards.

After a week off and a week of practice and scrimmages, Barnstable heads next to the Basketball City Classic in Boston to face 4 th grade opponents from across the state, the weekend of Feb. 24-25.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Finish Tied for 2nd Place in Regular season  

The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball team (8-6) finished in 2 nd place in the regular season in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League, defeating Taunton, 24-16, last Saturday on the road, but dropped a nail-biter to Falmouth (1-13) on Sunday, 29-25.

  Conor Walsh went 6-10 from the free throw line in the game and 4-8 in the last 3:00 minutes to help lead Barnstable to its 24-16 win over Taunton, while Rob Stuart hit two huge buckets from under the boards in the game’s waning moments to seal the win. Stuart finished with 7 points on the day, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot.

  Following Stuart and Walsh, was Sam Telman and Marcus Cunningham who each had 4 points, Timmy Roderigues (2 points, 4 rebounds) and Colby Blaze (1 point, 2 assists). Blaze played spectacularly on defense throughout the game, as did Roderigues and Telman and Clyde Perry who pulled down 3 rebounds on the day and had a blocked shot.

  In the tough Falmouth loss, Tim Roderigues and Rob Stuart provided the fireworks for Barnstable, with both players stealing inbound passes in the last 0:30 seconds and then each laying it in for two points. Stuart and Roederigues each had 6 points on the day, followed by Conor Walsh and Sam Telman each with 4 points, Justus Chaffee and Sean Campbell each with 2 points and Marcus Cunningham with 1 point. The Falmouth win was its first of the season with Ryan Johnson scoring 12 points and Brady Jones with 11 points on the day. Brendan Buchanon added 6 points for the Clippers.

  Barnstable finished tied at 8-6 on the regular season with Mashpee.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Hoop Team Splits Weekend Slate -- Again

The Barnstable 4th Grade boys basketball team (CCYBL) split its weekend slate last Sunday (Jan. 22), wrapping up the weekend with a fine, 31-18 victory over Middleboro.

  Marcus Cunningham led Barnstable with 10 points on the day, added 4 rebounds, a blocked shot and a pair of steals. Dereck Pacheco followed with a gutsy performance underneath, banging in 6 points and collecting 3 rebounds. Rob Stuart and Sam Telman followed with 4 points apiece, with Stuart pulling down 6 rebounds. Colby Blaze had 3 points , 3 steals, 2 blocked shots and an assist, followed by Clyde Perry and TJ Wardwell each with 2 points.

  Conor Walsh played a phenomenally tough game on defense throughout the affair, combining with Cunningham to apply a perfect 2-2-1 full court press near the end of the first half that created the turning point of the game. Walsh had 2 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals for his efforts.

  Justus Chaffee also played arguably his most solid game of the season with some key passes and a team-high 5 steals on the day, as did Timmy Roderigues who collected 4 steals and had 3 rebounds. Tom Mullen and Sean Campbell played solidly off the bench.

  The win put Barnstable at 7-5 on the regular season and still in second place in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League 4th grade boys division.

  In its first game on Sunday (Jan. 22), Barnstable seemed listless as it took an atypical pounding from visiting West Plymouth – tied for first place at 11-1. In spite of Barnstable’s defense holding West Plymouth at bay for the first 10 minutes of the game, West Plymouth came back strong and capitalized on 27 Barnstable turnovers to win, 30-15.

      Marcus Cunningham and Conor Walsh were the sole Barnstable players to hit field goals on the day, with Cunningham collecting 7 points and Walsh collecting 4 points. Cunningham added 6 rebounds and a pair of steals to his effort. Walsh had 4 rebounds and a steal. Other points scorers for Barnstable each earned a solo digit from the charity stripe, including Sam Telman (1-2), Dereck Pacheco (1-2) and TJ Wardwell (1-2).

      Rob Stuart collected 8 rebounds beneath the boards and had a pair of blocked shots and steals. All totaled, Barnstable went just 6-18 from the free throw line on the day and 4-31 from the field.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Hoop Team Splits Weekend Slate

      The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball Team went 1-1 last Sunday ( 1-15-06 ) with a key victory over guest Berkley , followed by a tough loss to Mashpee at Cape Cod Community College . The 4 th grade boys now stand at 6-4 on the season, tied for third place with Mashpee behind South and West Plymouth .

       Marcus Cunningham paced the Barnstable offense in its 18-15 win over Berkley , dumping in 8 points and had 3 rebounds, a blocked shot and 4 steals. Dereck Pacheco staged a gutsy performance beneath the boards with 5 rebounds and 4 points. He was followed by Conor Walsh (2 points, rebound, steal, assist, blocked shot), Clyde Perry (2 points) and Robbie Stuart (2 points, 4 steals, assist, 3 rebounds). Point guard Colby Blaze played exceptionally well with 4 assists, 3 steals and a pair of rebounds in this low-scoring affair.

       In Barnstable ’s afternoon game, a rematch was set with Mashpee as the visitors came to town in a successful attempt to avenge an intense, earlier-season loss. Mashpee led at the half, 9-7, and never looked back as Barnstable strained to find an offensive rhythm that would swing the game’s momentum its way.

       Marcus Cunningham and Brendan Lynch led Barnstable ’s offense, each with 3 points on the day, including Lynch’s first-ever 3-point shot. Following Lynch and Cunningham were Dereck Pacheco (2 points, 2 blocks, 3 rebounds), Robbie Stuart (2 points), Sam Telman (2 points) and Clyde Perry (2 points).

       Barnstable welcomes West Plymouth Sunday morning ( 1-22-06 ) at 9:15 a.m. at Cape Cod Community College and then heads to Middleboro on Sunday afternoon ( 1-22-06 ) at 2:30 p.m.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Take Two Wins Over Weekend

The Barnstable 4 th Grade Boys travel basketball team took two victories last weekend, 13-12 over Middleboro and 38-8 over Falmouth. The 4th Grade boys now stand at 4-2 in Cape Cod Youth Basketball League play.

       Marcus Cunningham led Barnstable in its 13-12 win over Middleboro, in a game that could be best described as a defensive free-for-all. All totaled, Barnstable had 25 steals and 27 rebounds as its defense proved to be formidable. On the offensive side, however, Barnstable went 6-43 from the floor.

       Down 12-11 with 1:00 remaining in the game, Cunningham fought hard for a rebound and layed it in to give the Red & White a 13-12 edge and, ultimately, the win.

       Dereck Pacheco followed with 3 points and Sam Telman, Sean Campbell and Rob Stuart each added 2 points. Stuart collected 7 rebounds. Justus Chaffee had four steals in a fine defensive effort.

       In its second game last Sunday, Barnstable’s offensive ability finally shined through as it dominated Falmouth in virtually every aspect of the game in a 38-8 tilt. Conor Walsh, Marcus Cunningham and Timmy Roderigues each canned 6 points from the floor to pace the boys in red, followed by Seamus Murray (4 pts.), Colby Blaze (2 pts.), Justus Chaffee (2 pts.), Brendan Lynch (2 pts.), Sean Campbell (2 pts.), Dereck Pacheco (2 pts.), Clyde Perry (2 pts.), Tommy Mullen (2 pts.) and Rob Stuart (2 pts.). All 14 Barnstable players contributed in the victory.

  Mullen had three nice assists playing point guard. Pacheco collected 8 rebounds while Stuart had 5 and Roderigues had 4.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Split Weekend With Big Win Over Mashpee  

The Barnstable 4th Grade boys basketball team evened its regular season record to 2-2 last Saturday night (Dec. 10) at the Quashnet School , defeating Mashpee, 25-22, in an intense, fast-paced, back and forth affair.

        Marcus Cunningham led Barnstable in the scoring department with 7 points, and added 7 rebounds. Seamus Murray played a fantastic game beneath the boards, collecting 6 points and 6 rebounds. Other scorers for Barnstable were Colby Blaze, Sam Telman, TJ Wardwell, Dereck Pacheco, Rob Stuart and Conor Walsh, each with 2 points.

        A fine defensive effort was turned in by Justus Chaffee, Sean Campbell, Clyde Perry, Brendan Lynch and Timmy Rodrigues.

        Mashpee’s top scorers were Shawn Hendricks (6), Greg Harris (4) and John Peters (12).

        Barnstable lost a closely contested affair with West Plymouth earlier in the day, 22-18.

       Cunningham had his best game to-date, notching a team-, game- and season-high 10 points. He added two blocked shots and four rebounds. Murray had 3 points and 7 rebounds. Other scorers included TJ Wardwell and Conor Walsh each with two points, and Clyde Perry with one point.

        Colby Blaze had 5 assists and 3 steals in an all-around solid effort.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Pick Up First Win in Even-Split Weekend Slate to Open Season  

The Barnstable 4 th Grade Boys basketball team broke even last weekend, with a tough, season-opening loss versus South Plymouth on the road, 32-18, followed by a gutsy, 20-11 victory over Berkeley.

       Marcus Cunningham led the Red & White versus South Plymouth with six points as he went 3-4 from the floor on the evening and collected five rebounds. Conor Walsh and Dereck Pacheco each banged in 4 points; Walsh added 2 assists and Pacheco battled for a team-high 16 rebounds on the night in a fantastic effort..

       Sam Telman and TJ Wardwell followed with 2 points apiece. Wardwell played a phenomenal game on defense, scrapping for three steals. Point guard Colby Blaze added two assists and had a pair of steals in a fine effort.

       In last Sunday’s 20-11 victory over Berkeley, Justus Chaffee and Colby Blaze split duty at point and each came away having staged a fantastic game on both sides of the floor. Chaffee and Blaze each had a pair of steals and coast-to-coast layups for four points apiece on the night. Each player added a perfect trifecta of steals and rebounds in their all-around, solid effort.

        Dereck Pacheco followed his previous night’s performance with a team-high 6 points on the night, while Marcus Cunningham dumped in 4 points. Robby Stuart had 2 points and 3 rebounds. All 14 players contributed in a tough, defensive stand to hold off the scrappy Berkeley squad. Earlier in the day, Berkeley had defeated Mashpee, 32-28 in overtime.

        Tom Mullen picked up three nice rebounds for his day’s work, while Sean Campbell made a pair of nice steals.


Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Battle Against Region’s Toughest Teams in Mansfield Tournament

The Barnstable 4th Grade Boys Basketball travel team (of the Barnstable Youth Basketball League) had quite an eye-opener last weekend when it dropped three games in the Mansfield Thanksgiving Hoop Tip-Off Tournament in Foxboro.

    Playing against some of the best 4 th grade competition in the region, the Barnstable boys fell to Westwood in the tournament opener, 49-23, then countered with a phenomenal effort in game two versus Mansfield, but fell, 36-23, in spite of having the lead four times in the game. In game three, Barnstable played Needham and fell, 60-16.

    In game one, Rob Stuart led all Barnstable scorers with 5 points and five rebounds. He added four steals in a solid effort. Stuart was followed by Marcus Cunningham and Sam Telman who each had 4 points, Conor Walsh with 3 points and Colby Blaze, Seamus Murray and TJ Wardwell each with 2 points.

    In game two, the 36-23 loss to Mansfield, Barnstable was led by Rob Stuart and Conor Walsh, each with 8 points, followed by Dereck Pacheco with 4 points, Seamus Murray and Sean Campbell each with 2 points and Colby Blaze with 1 point. Pacheco had 10 rebounds on the day, a blocked shot and pair of steals. Stuart added 7 rebounds and Blaze had five assists. Marcus Cunningham had 7 rebounds, three steals and two assists with a fine defensive effort.

    Game three was a tough one against an amazingly fast Needham team as Needham outgunned Barnstable, 60-16. Rob Stuart was the high scorer for Barnstable with 4 points while Clyde Perry led Barnstable on the boards with four rebounds. Seamus Murray, Sean Campbell, Marcus Cunningham, Justus Chaffee and Conor Walsh each added two points on the day. Timmy Roderigues and Chaffee played exceptionally on defense, with Roderigues picking up five steals and exhibiting great hustle on defense.
