Barnstable Middle School Hoop Boys Fall on Tough Times with 42-39 Loss to Mattacheese

The Barnstable Middle School boys basketball team has proven to be its own worst enemy, as it let its third straight 4th quarter lead evaporate into a loss in as many games Monday (Jan. 29) at Barnstable Middle School in Hyannis. BMS now stands at 4-6 on the year with three games remaining.
Hoping to avenge an earlier season loss to the Mattacheese School, Barnstable ended the first quarter of Monday’s game (Jan. 29) tied with its guests at 8-8. The boys in Red & White then turned it up a slight notch in the second quarter and ended the half with a two-point lead, 17-15. By the end of the third quarter, Barnstable led Mattacheese by 4 points, 29-25.
But once again, the wheels came off as Barnstable watched its fourth quarter lead quickly fade away until both teams were engaged in a neck and neck battle to see which team would give in first. With 0:03 seconds remaining, and the score knotted at 39-39, Mattacheese’s Max Young buried a three-pointer to make it 42-39. Travis Kendrew’s desperation attempt to tie it with his own trey rolled around the rim as the buzzer sounded Barnstable’s third straight loss.
Tim Biliouris led all scorers with 16 points and 15 rebounds. He added a blocked shot, 2 steals and an assist. He also went 2-2 from the charity stripe. Mattacheese’s Tom Barbo had 10 points, followed by Chris Balboni with 8 points and Max Young with 6 points. Justin Clark added 5 points for Mattacheese.

Running a man-to-man defense throughout, Barnstable had as much as a 12-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before sitting back just long enough to let the Plymouth sharpshooters go to work. Barnstable ended with a loss, 48-47.

At the close of the third frame, Barnstable still led Plymouth, 34-28, but in the fourth frame, Plymouth roared back, outscoring Barnstable, 20-13 for the 48-47 finale.

Barnstable Middle School Boys Even Record at 2-2 Over Wixon School

HYANNIS – The Barnstable Middle School boys basketball team evened its record at 2-2 last Thursday (Jan. 11) with a 46-35 win over the visiting Wixon School thanks in large part to an amazing all-around effort by 7 th grader Tim Biliouris.

Biliouris poured in a game- and season-high 18 points and matched that effort beneath the boards with 18 rebounds. He added three steals, a blocked shot, 2 assists and was 2-2 from the charity stripe.

Behind the big man, Biliouris, was point guard Alex Pernick who collected 8 points on a sharp, 4-7 performance from the floor. Pernick was equally adept on defense, collecting 5 steals. He added 4 assists in his effort and it was Pernick and Biliouris who orchestrated an unanswered, 18-0 run versus the stunned Wixon boys in the game’s first quarter.

Following Pernick was Matt Delaney (4 pts., assist), Ben Poe (4 pts., 5 rebounds), Bob Melley (4 pts., 3 rebounds), Everett Walsh (2 pts., 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists, steal), Ryan Smith (2 pts., 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Xavier Donalson (2 pts., assist, steal), Joe D’Olimpio (2 pts., steal), Tyler Adams (assist), Taylor Alford (rebound) and Christian Caldwell (rebound).

Barnstable went down 3-0 in the opening minutes of the first quarter before the gloves came off and the Red Raiders were off and running. Before the dust settled, Biliouris and Pernick had accounted for 12 points of Barnstable ’s 18-0 run, while Melley, Poe and D’Olimpio accounted for the remainder.

In the second quarter, it was more of the same as Barnstable allowed Wixon just six points through the remainder of the half, while adding 10 points to its own lead thanks again to Biliouris, Pernick, Delaney, Donalson and Smith. Barnstable ended the half ahead by a comfortable 28-9 margin. Walsh, Poe and Biliouris led the battle beneath the boards to help keep Wixon from getting second chances, as the Red Raiders’ opponents have been capitalizing upon since the season opened.

In the second half, being too comfortable may have been what Barnstable subscribed to as it collected just 8 third quarter points to Wixon’s 10. While the spread may have been a seemingly easy-to-hold-onto 17-point margin, Wixon had a burst of energy in the fourth quarter.

Wixon not only outscored the Red Raiders in the third quarter, 10-8, but it broadened that margin in the fourth quarter, showing great character, with a 17-10 effort. While the Red Raiders ultimately took home a 46-35 victory, and while it showed good sportsmanship not to run amok with the score as it had in the first stanza, equal or better teams may have erased the first half’s hard work with a slightly better showing.

Pernick ran the floor well in the second half, collecting 3 straight assists, while Biliouris really showed finesse when he took the charity stripe late in the fourth and lit the net on fire with his sweet stroke. Melley showed some resolve with a scrappy rebound in the waning minutes and a solid put back for two points.

Barnstable maintained posession of the ball with 1:30 left but opted to go for the three-pointer rather than drive the lane to tie it and Mattacheese capitalized, keeping the ball in its owne end until Mike Balboni scored another of his 20 points on the day and until time eventually elapsed.

Barnstable was down eight points, 26-18 at the half, but narrowed it down to a Nauset four-point lead, 36-32 at the end of three stanzas. With 2:06 remaining in the game, down 46-44, Biliouris found Walsh underneath for the game-tying bucket at 46-46, but Nauset would not let go in spite of the Red & White’s relentless defense. Foul shooting spelled the ultimate difference in this affair as Nauset went 15-22 from the charity stripe while Barnstable ’s Walsh, Biliouris and Taylor Alford went an uncharacteristic 3-11. Nauset’s cooler nerves prevailed in the end. Nauset’s Fitzpatrick canned two foul shots with 0:05 remaining in the game to seal the victory for the boys in black and gold.
